Subaru Serial Number Vin Decoder

Presumably out of a Canadian car (if it makes any difference) I have recently discovered that my 03 OBW (originally an EJ25 (2.5) now sports an EJ22 (2.2) with leaky HG's PO has not or cannot tell me what year make/model or year the transplant engine is from. Casting on the top front just says EJ22.so, I need to replace the head gaskets in it.

(overheating, leaking oil, bad news) Does it matter what year/make/model etc. I tell the parts people I want the HG kit for or do I just do a little digging, find a model that has a 2.2 and tell them that? (ie: perhaps 99 Legacy or something) IE: Are all EJ22 head gasket kits the same? I'll likely buy a felPro FEL PRO, Fel-Pro (however it's properly spelled) Thanks Mike.

No need to triple up treads; see item 3: I was thinking of bumping last nights for you anyway, or PMing lockmedic or plainOM that are online now, and would know best. ( Edit: Just did, and to canubaru and grossgary, cc to the ve9aaa.not to be confused with ve9aa) I was wondering if the previous owner used old style head gaskets on the rebuild and not multilayer steel like modern ones, or did not take the block / the heads to the engine shop to true them up, giving you a new leak just the same.

Not sure about the 2.2, but I believe the 2.5 should have a serial number stamped into the block at the upper rear, near the bell housing.

Subaru Toyota Volkswagen. A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the 17-digit string of numbers that an automotive. You can find out a lot about your car or truck if you are able to read and decode its VIN number, and that's why. The country, make, check digit, year, plant, and serial number are usually in the same.

If your 2.2 has this, the number itself might not identify the year or the model it came from, but some dealer parts listings will cross-reference part numbers with serial numbers. The 2.2 engine is probably going back at least 14 years (I don't think the 2.2 was used after '99), and dealers might not have retained full details from those old listings, especially as computers are updated etc. Nevertheless, a friendly Subaru dealer parts counter person might be willing to do some searching for the Subaru part number based on the serial number (or to confirm if it changed over the years of 2.2. Might also be used to do some preliminary research. Aftermarket HG supplier web-sites might also be used in the same way, i.e. To see if they have different HG part numbers for the 2.2 HG over the period from 93-99.

Verify headgaskets - EJ22's rarely have HG issues but it's of course possible, particularly a phase II which i think are more prone to HG issues than earlier EJ22's. That being said - make sure it's a phase II engine since it's been swapped: 1.

8 bolt bellhousing as mentioned would verify that the short block is Phase II 2. Spark plugs go ***through*** the valve covers - indicates they are PHase II heads. (phase I heads don't go through the cover, they are above the valve covers. A 1999 legacy or 1999-2001 Impreza EJ22 HG will be the part you need. I would not use a cheap ebay special - i would only use a couple of choice options for EJ headgaskets.
